4 Homepage Ideas You Need to Implement

What makes a good homepage these days? What do website visitors demand from the websites they visit?

It's hard to say.

Website visitors themselves may not even know. According to a study done by Nielson, the average web surfer only spends 10-20 seconds on a website before leaving.

Obviously, as someone trying to sell something online, this is a problem. So how do we catch a visitor's attention? With a killer homepage. In this article, we'll give you 4 homepage ideas that will help you turn visitors into customers.

1. Design From a Visitor's Perspective

It's important to look at your website with fresh eyes, as if you're seeing it for the first time. What would you want to know about your website? What kind of information would you like to see?

For most, you want to see a clear value proposition. What can this site offer you that others can't? To answer this question, you have to provide an explanation of your product or service right on the homepage.

You also need to do it as succinctly as possible, as the average user only reads 28% of the text on any given page. If your homepage is too vague in its value proposition, all your SEO work you did to get users to your site will have been for naught.

2. Include a Sparse Navigation Menu

Your navigation should be similarly sparse and descriptive. There's no reason to have your website branch out into all these different menu options. Make getting the information to the customers easy.

If you want a section of your site describing the services you provide, don't create an impossibly long dropdown list of services and don't just create a hyperlink that says "Services" either. Meet your customers somewhere in the middle.

If you sell movies, make your product page say "Movies" instead of "Products." Customers online are fickle and will leave after even just a moment of confusion. So keep it simple!

3. Avoid Hyperbole

When creating copy for their homepages, people often make the mistake of drifting into hyperbole when giving their sales pitch for their business. They'll say things like "This lawnmower is the best ever created!" Or "This mattress has revolutionized sleep!"

These intense, declarative statements often make you sound like a snake oil salesman in the eyes of the average customer. Instead, your copy should be unique. Your sales pitch should be something they've never heard before.

4. Consider a Multimedia Element

Let's face it: text is dead. Or dying, at least. We still need it to quickly convey information, but a simple page of text doesn't catch people's attention like it used to.

For this reason, you should consider adding a multimedia element to your homepage. These days, you can do all sorts of things. You can add 3D graphics, pictures that change when you scroll over them, and you can even add a video that plays in the background of your homepage.
