What exactly are hashtags or hash tags?
I found myself asking this question this week as I was reminded by Ellen that it wasn’t that long ago that we were introduced to the symbol as the “pound” or “number” sign on push-button telephones… We’ve come a long way since then.
A day doesn’t go by that I don’t hear hashtag this or hashtag that. And I admit it; I’ve used them on Facebook, Instagram, text messages as well as speaking them without really giving a second thought to the actual purpose or definition of what they are.
So what do I do when I need to educate myself on something? Google it!
Hashtag.org defines them simply as: an easy way for people to categorize, find and join conversations on a particular topic. In other words, hashtags bring us together. Now I know that hashtags are meant to bring us together, to allow us to collaborate, discuss and share opinions and views on similar topics. Now I love hashtags!
In a time where our world is experiencing a lot of turmoil, could hashtags be the answer to bring us together to discuss the issues and dilemmas we are all facing? Absolutely!
And, as we continue to emerge into the realm of digital everything – we can count on hashtags to bring us closer to the topics, services, products and businesses we are searching for!
Let’s get hashing.
